Getting back to a pre-baby body after pregnancy and childbirth is a challenge shared by many women. Even after returning to a healthy weight, women often notice that areas of their body don't always return to the pre-baby shape — despite diet and exercise. What has come to be known as a "mommy makeover" procedure has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures to help women restore their pre-baby shape and appearance.

Below, we share what's included in a mommy makeover procedure, the average costs of a mommy makeover, how long it takes to recover and how long you should expect the results will last.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A “mommy makeover" is the popular term for a combination of cosmetic surgeries performed post-childbirth and designed to restore or improve the areas of a woman's body often impacted by pregnancy. The personalized combination of cosmetic surgery procedures is usually performed in a single surgery.1

  • Pros: The main benefit of a mommy makeover is that it can address multiple cosmetic issues within a single surgery and within one recovery period.2 With a customized procedure designed to fit your goals, your body can be restored to its pre-baby appearance, boosting your confidence by helping you look and feel your best.
  • Cons: Since multiple cosmetic procedures are involved, a mommy makeover may require up to six weeks of downtime. That may include no heavy lifting or exercise. For some, recovery might be painful; depending on what you choose, some operations may leave scars.2

What Can Be Included in a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover surgery primarily focuses on a tummy tuck and breast augmentation and/or breast lift, since these areas of the woman's body are most impacted by pregnancy and childbirth. Many patients may also decide to add liposuction or a cosmetic injectable treatment for a more comprehensive result.3

Here are nine procedures you might consider as part of your mommy makeover:4

1. Breast augmentation

breast augmentation procedure can help fix sagging breasts. Breast implants, which can be silicone or saline, are used in breast augmentation to help increase breast size. In the U.S. the average cost of breast augmentation is $7,149.5

2. Breast lift

A breast lift can reduce the appearance of loose skin and improve breast firmness and positioning.3 Depending on the type of breast lift chosen, in the U.S. the average cost can be as high as $8,128.5

3. Tummy tuck

tummy tuck can help remove sagging skin around the abdomen and help tighten abdominal muscles. In the U.S. the average cost of a tummy tuck is $7,983.6

4. Liposuction

Liposuction removes stubborn areas of fat, helping reduce the appearance of cellulite in the stomach, arms, legs, back and buttocks.3 In the U.S., one chooses to get liposuction in the upper abdominal area, lower abdominal area or both in the same procedure.6 In the U.S. the average cost for upper and lower abdominal liposuction is $7,857.6 For upper abdominal liposuction, the average cost is $3,724, and for lower abdominal liposuction it is $4,874.6

5. Non-invasive fat removal

Non-invasive fat removal procedures, such as CoolSculpting®, help reduce the size of specific areas of the body over time and without incisions.7 It's a great option to smooth and trim targeted areas of the body.7 In the U.S. the average cost for CoolSculpting is $1,723.5

6. Buttock enhancement

Buttock augmentation involves using implants or fat grafting (also called a Brazilian butt lift or BBL) to help improve your butt's contour, shape and size.8 The goal of the procedure is to create a rounder, firmer, aesthetically pleasing butt.8 In the U.S. the average cost for butt implants is $7,992, and for BBL it is $6,240.5

7. Arm lift

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a procedure that can help reshape the portion underneath the upper arm.9 The procedure can help tighten and smooth loose skin and hanging fat.In the U.S. the average cost of an arm lift is $6,732.6

8. Thigh lift

Thigh lifts can help reduce excess skin and fat on your upper legs.10 The result is a smoother, more contoured look.10 In the U.S. the average cost of a thigh lift is $8,715.6

9. Vaginal rejuvenation

Vaginal rejuvenation refers to a series of procedures that can repair and tighten the vagina after childbirth.7 In the U.S. the average cost for vaginal rejuvenation is $1,606.5

How Much Is a Mommy Makeover?

The average cost of a mommy makeover varies widely, but a midrange price is around $30,000 (see midrange mommy makeover cost table below for more details). This wide range in price difference is because a mommy makeover is essentially a combination of several different surgeries and is personalized to each patient. It also includes fees and tests, which may impact the total cost of a mommy makeover, such as:6

  • Surgeon's fee
  • Facility fee
  • Anesthesia
  • Post-surgery fees and garments
  • Cost of saline or silicone breast implants (if applicable)
  • Lab tests
  • Prescription medications

Mommy makeover procedure prices

So, how much does it cost if you're interested in a BBL and tummy tuck, but not an arm lift? As mentioned earlier, it depends on what elements of a mommy makeover procedure you choose to include. Where you live and the specific doctor you choose will also impact how much you'll pay, but on average, the cost of mommy makeover procedures are as follows:

Breast lift $3,950 to $14,5005 $8,1285

  • Non-surgical tummy tuck: $1,000 to $3,600

Mommy Makeovers Can Be Targeted to Fit Your Budget

So, what are your options if your budget is tight and you can't afford every procedure? You might instead choose a mommy makeover that fits in your price range, starting with a lower-level makeover focusing on the basics.

Basic mommy makeover costs

If you'd still like to touch up certain areas of your body after pregnancy, you might consider a lower-end, more basic mommy makeover that focuses on just a few procedures. This could include:

Procedure Average cost
Traditional tummy tuck $7,9836
Breast augmentation $7,1495
Non-invasive fat removal $9995
Total estimated range $16,131

This costs roughly $16,131 on average (price may vary based on geographic location and surgical center).

You might even be able to get the price lower by opting for a milder, less extensive tummy tuck and a less expensive breast lift rather than breast augmentation. For patients with mild loose skin, a non-surgical tummy tuck costs an average of $1,832.5 And an anchor cut breast lift — for people who only need a mild lift — runs an average of $505.5 With these changes, the total estimated cost might be closer to $3,336, depending on where you live.

Midrange mommy makeover cost

You may be looking to target your lower body in addition to your stomach and breasts. A midrange, lower-body-focused mommy makeover could look something like this:

Procedure Average cost
Traditional tummy tuck $7,9836
Breast augmentation $7,1495
Brazilian butt lift $6,2405
Thigh lift $8,7156
Total estimated cost range $30,087

The average cost range comes out to $30,087 (price may vary based on geographic location and surgical center). Once again, you can lower that even more by opting for a milder breast lift and a less extensive tummy tuck.

"The works" mommy makeover cost

Of course, if you have the budget, you might want to go for a more extensive makeover. Let's say you want it all: breasts, stomach, arms, legs and buttocks. If you wanted to be smoothed, trimmed and toned from head to toe, a list of procedures could include:

Procedure Average cost
Traditional breast lift $8,1285
Traditional tummy tuck $7,9836
Traditional liposuction (upper and lower abdominal) $7,8576
Brazilian butt lift $6,2405
Arm lift $6,7326
Thigh lift $8,7156
Total estimated cost range $45,655

The average cost range comes out to $45,655 (price may vary based on geographic location and surgical center).

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

Women who are considering a mommy makeover should be:11

  • Finished having children
  • Finished breastfeeding for more than a few months
  • In overall good health
  • At their goal weight and can maintain it
  • Without significant scar tissue from a previous surgery
  • Nonsmokers
  • Able to rest for two weeks3

To determine if you're a good candidate for a mommy makeover, start by scheduling a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in each procedure you're considering as part of a mommy makeover.

How Long Does a Mommy Makeover Take?

How long a mommy makeover takes depends on what you're having done. A tummy tuck can take up to three hours; a breast lift might be one to three hours; a breast augmentation might be one to two hours. You'll be given general anesthesia while your customized cosmetic procedures are being performed, and you'll be monitored closely once your surgery's complete.11

What to Expect When Recovering From a Mommy Makeover

Since multiple procedures are involved, recovery time for a mommy makeover is longer when compared to other types of cosmetic surgery procedures. You'll feel pain the first few days, but it will reduce quite a bit after about a week. You may also have some bruising and swelling that resolves in a few weeks, with some residual swelling possibly taking up to six months to heal. Plan to take two weeks off from work and avoid heavy exercise for at least four to six weeks.2

Is a Mommy Makeover Covered by Insurance?

Most patients should not expect any health insurance benefits to pay for a mommy makeover because the procedures involved are rarely deemed medically necessary.11 Procedures that are not medically necessary are typically not covered by medical insurance benefits. Instead, you'll need to look for ways to finance your surgery, such as through a CareCredit credit card or a financing payment plan offered by the cosmetic surgery practice.
