Got the sniffles, endless sneezing or a sore throat? This is the time of year when cold and flu season tends to peak across the country. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent the flu or cold. And if you’re already suffering, knowing how to soothe your symptoms can help you get well faster.

Tips to help prevent the flu and colds

Cold and flu viruses are easily spread through droplets in the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Reduce your chances of becoming a victim with these preventive steps:

  • Get a flu shot
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water
  • Try to avoid or minimize contact with sick people
  • Avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes to help prevent the spread of germs
  • Keep your home, car and workspace surroundings clean (and germ free!) by wiping down areas that are touched frequently like doorknobs, light switches, faucets, gym equipment and remote controls
  • Take care of yourself to help keep your immune system strong by getting plenty of sleep, eating a healthy diet and taking steps to avoid stress
  • Avoid sharing cups, utensils and towels with others to minimize the spread of germs

Tips for recovering from the flu and colds

If you find yourself hit with a cold or flu virus, try these tips to help relieve your symptoms or shorten the duration.

  • Get plenty of rest to allow your body to recover
  • Embrace steamy showers to help clear nasal passages and moisten mucus membranes
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  • Soothe a sore throat and nasal passages with warm foods and beverages
  • Try over-the-counter pain relievers, decongestants and cough suppressants
  • Place a humidifier in your home
  • Change toothbrushes, and wash towels and bedding regularly during cold and flu season to help prevent spreading germs to others in your household

If your cold or flu symptoms worsen or don’t improve within five to seven days, be sure to schedule an appointment with your doctor who can evaluate your symptoms and determine the best treatment option.
