Puberty is well known as a time full of body changes and hormonal fluctuations. Those changes can leave many teenagers embarrassed or uncomfortable due to complexion issues such as blotchy, dry or greasy skin, acne and more. The good news is, there are steps your teen can take at home to get clear skin. Share these five skin care tips for teenagers to help give your teen’s troubled skin a little TLC.
Tip 1: Cleanse twice a day
Washing your face in the morning and evening is key for clearing away dirt, oil and dead skin cells. Choose a cleanser that matches your skin's condition to remedy imbalances. For example, teens with oily skin may opt for a formula with salicylic acid to help minimize oil production. For dry skin, use a moisturizing brand. Cleansers with benzoyl peroxide are often good for treating inflamed skin and minimizing acne. For sensitive skin, a formula that's free of perfumes and other additives may be ideal.
Tip 2: Practice good makeup habits
Since clogged pores can happen as a result of ingredients in some makeup brands, choose products that are better for the skin — like those that use natural ingredients, or are labeled as "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic." Refrain from using other people's makeup or sharing your own, since bacteria can travel easily on applicators. Clean your makeup sponges daily (replace monthly), and wash and dry applicator brushes every few months. Discard mascara after three months of use and eyeliner after three to six months.
Leaving foundation, eyeshadow and mascara on your face while you sleep can let impurities soak deep into the skin. If your regular facial cleanser isn't strong enough to remove all traces, try makeup removal wipes.
Tip 3: Drink water for clear skin
Hydrate skin from the inside out by drinking at least 64 ounces of water each day. Use a facial moisturizer daily, opting for an oil-free moisturizer if you have problems with excess oil production. Protect your skin from the elements by wearing a scarf or hood in windy or harsh weather. To help heal extra dry skin, try setting a humidifier in your bedroom.
Tip 4: Treat oily skin (not just pimples)
Acne occurs when skin's pores become clogged due to an over-production of oil and/or superficial dirt. While spot-treating pimples can get fast results, it's important to adopt an all-over skin care routine that promotes healthy, clear skin. If you have problem acne, avoid touching your face — that includes trying to pop pimples — to prevent the spreading of bacteria. After cleansing, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a lotion with benzoyl peroxide — but use as directed since over-moisturizing can cause the opposite effect by stimulating oil production.
Tip 5: Protect skin from the sun
Since sun damage accumulates on the skin throughout one's lifetime, it's never too early to adopt good sun protection habits. To safeguard delicate facial skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays that can cause premature aging, wear protective clothing and hats in direct sunlight. Be sure to incorporate sunscreen into your skin care routine all year round, preferably SPF 30 or higher, and stay away from tanning beds.
In addition to the teenage skin care tips above, a visit to the dermatologist can help your teen effectively address and treat the underlying issues of recurring acne and improve skin health.
