A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is ideal for anyone looking to enhance a flat backside; create a more balanced, symmetrical figure; or reduce the cellulite or sagging skin that often accompanies age, weight loss or pregnancy. Some women include a BBL as part of a larger "mommy makeover," which may also include a tummy tuck, breast augmentation and additional liposuction.1 Although full-bottomed celebrities may have contributed to the growing BBL trend, the procedure is popular with patients for a variety of reasons.

What Is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is a popular type of buttock augmentation procedure, unique in that it creates a fuller, more contoured gluteal area with the added benefit of eliminating unwanted fat from other parts of the body.2
How Does a Brazilian Butt Lift Work?
During BBL surgery, liposuction is used to transfer fat from areas of the patient's body, such as the abdomen, back, hips, thighs or arms. The areas targeted for fat transfer vary from patient to patient, based on individual needs and body type. The fat tissue is then transferred into the buttocks. The procedure not only creates a more rounded derriere but also resculpts other areas of the body, including the torso, thighs or arms, for a more balanced appearance.3
Brazilian Butt Lift Cost
The cost of a Brazilian butt lift in the U.S. ranges from $6,672 to $16,847, with an average cost* of $8,686.4 BBL pricing may vary depending on the areas of the body where fat tissue will be harvested through liposuction.
Other factors that may affect the overall price of a Brazilian butt lift include separate fees for:5
- The surgical facility
- The anesthesiologist
- Prescription medications
- Postsurgical care and follow-up appointments
- Combining a BBL with other procedures like breast augmentation or tummy tuck

Does Insurance Cover BBL Surgery?
Typically, a Brazilian butt lift is considered cosmetic surgery and not medically necessary, so the procedure and any complications that result from it are generally not covered by medical insurance.5
How to Finance a Brazilian Butt Lift
Because a Brazilian butt lift is usually not considered medically necessary, the IRS does not allow patients to use FSA/HSA accounts to cover the cost of the cosmetic surgery.
However, many plastic surgeons offer zero-interest patient financing plans that include incentives for paying in full ahead of time, or the option to make manageable monthly payments over a designated period of time.
As with any cosmetic surgery, be sure to consult with a highly experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon to find out if you're a good candidate for a BBL.
