Body sculpting by freezing fat cells, scientifically known as cryolipolysis, is a popular minimally invasive fat reduction treatment used to target problem areas such as the stomach, thighs, hips, back, love handles, arms and chin. There are many FDA-approved companies offering the technology including CoolSculpting® and EmSculpt®. Because the treatment is minimally invasive, patients can expect to have minimal downtime and an easier recovery than with a more invasive surgical procedure such as liposuction, tummy tuck or mommy makeover. Results are not the same as a surgical procedure, so patients should discuss their body sculpting goals with their provider to ensure they can be attained with cryolipolysis. Below we dive into the cost of CoolSculpting®, if insurance benefits cover the procedure and how CoolSculpting® financing can help.

How much does CoolSculpting® procedure cost?

The average cost of CoolSculpting® or cryolipolysis depends upon the individual patient’s body goals, the area or areas being treated, and the number of treatments required to achieve the desired results, which can be anywhere from one to four treatments. Patients can typically expect to pay between $2,000 to $4,0001. Some doctors offer package pricing if the patient has multiple areas they would like treated.

Is CoolSculpting® covered by insurance?

Patients should not expect any insurance benefits to pay for CoolSculpting® treatment. CoolSculpting® work and other types of cryolipolysis or fat freezing are considered cosmetic procedures and not medically necessary. Procedures that are not medically necessary and do not improve physical functionality are not covered by medical insurance benefits and not eligible for health savings account (HSA) reimbursement2.

How can I pay for a CoolSculpting® procedure?

Most cosmetic or plastic surgeons expect payment on the day the procedure is to be performed. There are several payment options available. Of course, you can tap into savings to pay for the procedure. If you are more interested in paying over time, it’s important to know very few surgeons extend credit to patients through their practice where patients would receive bills from and pay the surgeon directly on a monthly basis. But almost all accept general purpose credit cards and many accept the CareCredit credit card, which may be a convenient way to pay for the procedure.

Can I use my CareCredit credit card to pay for a CoolSculpting® procedure?

Yes. If approved, you can use your CareCredit credit card at locations within the CareCredit network to finance your CoolSculpting® procedure and other cosmetic procedures, such as tummy tucks or breast augmentations. The benefit of using CareCredit for CoolSculpting® is the opportunity to use promotional financing and pay with convenient monthly payments*. You can also use your CareCredit card again and again** to pay for other health, wellness and beauty needs such as Botox®, microdermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing treatments. To apply, go to carecredit.com/apply. Then, to find a cosmetic or plastic surgeon near you who accepts the CareCredit credit card, go to carecredit.com/doctor-locator/.
