A hands-free crutch can help you use the uninjured parts of your leg to support you as you stand or walk. It is designed to help you comfortably kneel on a padded platform. You can also sit in a chair while wearing the device.

While a hands-free crutch can be a great option, it may not be the ideal solution for everyone. You may find a hands free crutch to be a good fit if:1

  • Your injury is to your lower leg and requires you to be non-weight bearing
  • One of your legs is unaffected by the injury
  • You are between 4’10” and 6’6” inches tall and weigh less than 275 lbs
  • You can kneel comfortably and bend your knee to 90 degrees
  • You were able to descend stairs without holding on to a railing before your injury

How Much Does a Hands-free Crutch Cost?

The average cost of a hands-free crutch without insurance is around $150.1 Original models of the hand-free crutch cost $450 or more but newer models designed for single patient use are lighter and considerably lower in cost.2

Does Insurance Cover a Hands-free Crutch?

A hands-free crutch may be covered by your insurance. Check with your plan provider to determine your specific benefits.

The exact amount of coverage and what out-of-pocket costs you will pay depends on factors such as your:

  • Private medical insurance plan
  • Provider
  • Annual deductible
  • Co-pay requirements

How Can I Pay for a Hands-free Crutch?

If you don’t have insurance, or need help with co-pays, deductibles or other out-of-pocket costs, you have several options:

  • Savings: If you have the funds readily available, of course you can simply tap into your savings.
  • HSA or FSA: You may also be able to use a tax-free Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for it.
  • CareCredit: If you are interested in paying over time, almost all medical equipment providers accept general purpose credit cards. Many also accept the CareCredit credit card, which may be a convenient way to pay for a hands-free crutch.

Can I Use My Carecredit Credit Card to Pay for a Hands-free Crutch?

Yes. If approved, you can use your CareCredit credit card at locations within the CareCredit network to finance hands-free crutch or other medical equipment and supplies.

The benefit of using a CareCredit credit card is the opportunity to use promotional financing.* If approved, you can pay for the care you need immediately. You can use your CareCredit card again and again to pay for other health and wellness needs. Use the Acceptance Locator or download the CareCredit Mobile App to find a medical equipment provider near you who accepts the CareCredit credit card.
